July 18, 2021 Speaker: Darren McCormick Series: John: The Gospel Of Belief
Topic: The Gospel Of John Scripture: John 17:1–26
This is the longest prayer we have of Jesus.
---Jesus prayed looking up with His eyes open.
------We tend to do the opposite.
---Jesus starts off with acknowledging the time had come.
------For the purpose He was sent.
John 17:1-5 ~ Jesus prays for Himself.
John 17:6-19 ~ Jesus prays for His disciples.
John 17:20-26 ~ Jesus prays for all believers.
1. Jesus prays for Himself
---Verse 4 is written past tense which the event had not passed at the time that Jesus actually prayed.
---Jesus asked to be restored to His former position.
------John also wrote Revelation & saw Jesus in His glory when Jesus told him to write those events he witnessed down.
---If we see Jesus in the glory He really is in then it would change our relationship with Him & our worship toward Him.
2. Jesus prays for His disciples
---Jesus asks for protection for the disciples.
------against the evil one.
------to be effective to make more disciples.
3. Jesus prays for future disciples
---for them to be effective also.
---for them to be with Him & for Him to be with them.
------to be hin His presence for eternity.
---Jesus spent about 5 times more praying for other than Himself.
Our acts of obedience bring God glory.
We are called to love.
---love the Father.
---love other believers.
---love the lost.
